Independent Learning

From September 2025, students at Trinity will be supported in their learning by a comprehensive programme of knowledge testing and quizzing. This has already begun with Year 11, who have had access to Trinity Academy Knowledge Organisers (TAKOs) for the past term. Each week, Year 11 students are asked to learn up to 60 terms in their TAKO knowledge booklets. These are knowledge terms that students have already come across in lessons, but need to remember and retain as they move through school.

Students are given an exercise book and are taught how to use Look, Cover, Write, Check to help memorise knowledge terms. A short video on how to use this technique for revision can be found here. We do this because knowledge - and knowing stuff - is fundamental to success at GCSE. This type of knowledge testing is the most effective way to revise, as per research from multiple schools and journals.nEach week, students are quizzed on their knowledge terms. This type of regular self-quizzing and testing helps our students to remember the key knowledge they need in their exams.

But how can you help as a parent?

The most helpful thing you can do to support your child's home learning is remove their smartphone from them when they get home from school. Phones are a distraction and seriously hinder pupil learning. Help create the conditions for effective revision by removing these.

You can also help by quizzing your child at home using our quizzing booklets. This is a simple exercise that can be done each evening to support your child.

On top of TAKO work, all students at Trinity are set 1 hour of Maths homework on Sparx each week.
